US Stock Tokens Surge Past Precious Metals in Crypto Exchange TradFi Volume

Per the joint CoinGecko and MEXC report released in late July, US stock tokens dethroned precious metals as the largest TradFi category on centralized exchanges in June 2026 — a $6.59 billion actively-traded market that grew 366.7% since January 2025.

US Stock Tokens Surge Past Precious Metals in Crypto Exchange TradFi Volume

I don't care about the hype narrative. I care about what this means for execution, order book depth, and where the liquidation engines sit when the music stops.

The Volume Numbers Tell the Real Story

Combined monthly spot and perpetuals volume across Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, Gate, and MEXC exploded from $3.46 billion in January 2025 to $393.15 billion in June 2026. That's over 100x in 18 months. The first half of 2026 alone generated $1.45 trillion in crypto TradFi turnover — roughly ten times the $135.47 billion traded across all of 2025. Perpetuals carried 98.5% of June's flow: $387.39 billion. Spot contributed a measly $5.75 billion. Let that sink in. Nobody is buying tokenized equities for ownership. They're running leveraged bets through derivatives on synthetic instruments with thin underlying liquidity. Open interest climbed from $60 million to a $4.67 billion peak by June 30, roughly 77x. Those are real held positions, not churn — and real liquidation cascades waiting to fire.

Why the Rotation Matters

Survey data from 6,185 respondents across 13 languages backs the volume: 61.9% of crypto-native users have already touched TradFi products on a CEX, 74.2% of TradFi-experienced users shifted some activity onto crypto rails, and 83.3% plan to increase volume. The pitch is always-on access and one-account convenience. What's missing from the report: counterparty risk on tokenized stocks with no SEC registration, mark-price divergence between synthetic perpetuals and real equity closes, and settlement opacity when an oracle feed hiccups during a NY cash session. The market cap arc — peaking at $7.50 billion on February 5, 2026 before settling to $6.59 billion by June — tracks gold's rally and subsequent correction. That isn't a "structural shift." That's drawdown. And drawdowns trigger liquidations.

The Verdict

Safe for large capital? Not yet. The flow is undeniable but the plumbing is built for leverage, not capital preservation. If you're running size on these synthetic equity perps, you're trusting a liquidation engine to absorb a multi-billion-dollar cascade without slippage spikes. MEXC briefly led this market with 35.4% share back in February 2025; leadership has since rotated. That tells you everything about order book resilience under stress — it's a function of who is currently paying the tightest spread, not who has the deepest balance sheet. Recent retail FX trading volume jumping 22% on similar platforms showed the same pattern: surging participation, fragile depth. Until these exchanges publish independent proof-of-reserves for TradFi collateral, disclose oracle infrastructure, and demonstrate liquidation engines under load, I'm cutting size. You should too.
